David Stafford

I first started working a dog in Schutzhund in 1994. My wife and I combined a week's holiday in Scotland with working a male that we had imported from Germany. Twice a day we worked him at 'Callanway' with Eric Roberts who was impressed with Bronco's ability. In fact, it was Eric who contacted the Merthyr Schutzhund Group on my behalf to see if I could continue to work Bronco with them on our return home. At that time the BSA was the preserve of GSDs only. Fortunately, thanks to Eric's support, I was accepted with a Dobermann and I believe I was the first person to work the breed in Schutzhund in the UK. I was Club Treasurer for three or four years.

Unfortunately, the Merthyr Group eventually had to fold because of dwindling membership and so I had to look elsewhere to train my dogs. A chat with Ron White on the phone resulted in me being welcomed at Severnside. I find it a great Club with superb facilities where the members from day one have always been supportive.

After 40 years in Dobermanns I have purchased my first GSD, Argonne Fern, call name 'Fabi'.
